Once again the Academy get it completely wrong. Of course this had not only a lot to do with the type of film that The Lord of the Rings is, but the fact that everyone know that this was going to be followed by sequels in two successive years and knowing that if they gave the award to the first one they were probably going to have to do the same for the others.
